With only one year of formal education, he learned to cut hair in Jonesboro, Georgia, and opened his first barbershop there in 1878. In 1882, he moved to Atlanta, and there he became one of the city’s top barbers on fashionable Peachtree Street. Herndon invested his income in real estate and became the largest African American owner of property in Atlanta. In 1905, he was approached by two prominent black ministers, one of whom was Reverend Peter Bryant, pastor of the Wheat Street Baptist church.

She told her children to keep the land in the family; owning property was a way to maintain their freedom and independence. Mason soon realized that the land was quite valuable.
